Other Middle Eastern Themed Literature Lessons:
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
Here is a lesson that has students connect Maslow's hierarchy of needs to an Egyptian novel by Naguib Mahfouz, Midaq Alley. You can use this psychological vantage point to explore any Middle Eastern themed (or culturally rich) text to evaluate the theory and discuss how culture affects the human hierarchy of needs.
Power Structures in Midaq Alley
Attached is an adapted lesson from a teacher and was originally used with To Kill a Mockingbird to explore power and its connection to the world surrounding us. I have adapted this for use with Midaq Alley. Again, this can be modified for any work of literature. This is great for getting students to explore the cultural implications of power. I have also included a SMART Document that allows students to move characters to particular areas on the social power hierarchy.
Writing Revision and Feedback Regarding the Arabian Nights
Here you will find a revision and feedback form I have created as a response to my graduate cornerstone action research project regarding best practices for improving student writing through authentic feedback and revision. Through a synthesis of research, you will find a revision and feedback process that will increase student writing quality. Students have often tell me this has been one of the most helpful activities to help improve written work.
